The
Wetterhûn: a dog with character
The
Wetterhûn is one of the two Frisian sporting dog breeds. The other breed is a
Stabij.
The
Wetterhûn is a race which may be called unique in more than one aspect.
To
start with, the appearance of the Wetterhûn shows barely any similarity to any
other breed of dog. The sturdy astrakhan coat with the protective oily
undercoat, the somewhat fierce look, the sturdy wide head and the spiral tail
give the Wetterhûn its characteristic appearance. It is a medium-sized dog: the
ideal size for dogs is 59 cm, and for bitches 55 cm.
The
Wetterhûn (the Frisian word for ‘water dog’) used to be used for hunting
otters and polecats and other animal species which do not let themselves be
overpowered without any resistance.
The
Wetterhûns trained for this purpose therefore certainly did not turn out to be
afraid.
This
still applies to many Wetterhûns but at the same time the Wetterhûn has a very
affectionate and sensitive nature, as a result of which it attaches itself very
strongly to the family members.
The
Wetterhûn behaves in a somewhat more reserved manner towards strangers, but is
certainly not aggressive. The Wetterhûn is considered an excellent guard dog:
an ideal dog for the yard.
The Wetterhûn: a dog with character
In
order to understand its character, you must have some insight into why it was
once selected for hunting.
Because
the Wetterhûn was and is also very much appreciated as a sporting dog. For
example, the Wetterhûn hunts close to the boss, similar to most spaniels.
They
are not champion dogs but are good retrievers and in particular excellent and
very persevering searchers. Its curly, somewhat oily undercoat protects him for
a whole hunting day against the most severe conditions. A Wetterhûn is a dog
which can stand hard wear. Thick reedy borders or thick undergrowth and even
bramble bushes are obstacles which the Wetterhûn can easily cope with.
A
Wetterhûn thrives the best if it gets enough exercise: a few long walks a day
and the possibility of a swim now and again are ideal. Probably as a result of
its instinctive preference to hunt close to the boss, the Wetterhûn is also an
easy dog to walk with. It will not run away so quickly and usually follows its
boss without too many incentives. Probably as a result of this as well, it is
also very suitable as a dog for the yard, a Wetterhûn usually remains in the
yard without any problems. Its inclination to go off wandering is low. The
Wetterhûn is an ideal house pet and dog for the yard.
Its
calm and reliable nature develops the best with a female or male boss who
behaves calmly and somewhat laconically. It is desirable to be consequent during
training because the Wetterhûn is bit stubborn. The Wetterhûn is a dog with
character and an excellent companion.
